Barack Obama famously said in 2008 that “elections have consequences.”
While that era was punctuated by a reeling Republican Party, the political landscape 8 years later could not be more different. With the West Virginia governor switching party Thursday night, Republicans now hold more governorships than they ever have in American history.
On top of sweeping National political control, Republicans also hold a commanding control over individual state governorships and legislatures. Having complete single party control over the state governing bodies is referred to as a trifecta.

With tonight's switch by West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice from Democrat to Republican, the GOP expanded its dominance of state governments.
The Republican Party now controls the governorships and the state legislatures of 26 states (including Nebraska's supposedly nonpartisan legislature). Altogether, the populations in these states account for 48 percent of the U.S. population, according to 2016 Census estimates.
At least Democrats get Hawaii.
