General Kelly, Trump’s new Chief of Staff, has already started to do exactly what the President brought him on to do: Corral any disorder in the West Wing.
Reportedly, in a recent meeting there, two top aides lost focus and began discussing something other than what was on the agenda. Kelly’s response: he demanded that they leave the room!
He’s taking the reins in other aspects, too. For example, reports indicate that the process for meeting with the President has become more formal. That sounds like a good thing.
Even his own daughter now reports to General Kelly instead of directly to her father. Same for Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner. And staffers can no longer stand around, competing to meet with the President.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the General’s process is even why Trump’s tweets have slowed down. That’s something else, isn’t it? I get that the President uses Twitter because the press is fake, but I think we can all agree that a little less impulsivity with that would be a good thing.
One worry, though, is that Trump not become isolated. He’s a social man, and he thrives on interaction. His good friend, Rudy Guliani, said: “It wouldn’t work to try to isolate President Trump. He would rebel against that.” “General Kelly has to balance on the one hand an orderly process, and on the other hand an orderly process that doesn’t in any way isolate the president.”
