President Donald Trump rang up Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo on Friday to reassure the governor and his people he's with them “1,000 percent”:
Calvo beamed, as Trump opened the call:
“Good morning, good morning. Great to speak with you. I just wanted to pay my respects, and we are with you 1,000 percent. You are safe. We're with you 1,000 percent. I wanted to call and say hello, how are you?”
Calvo was equally effusive in his response:
"As the governor of Guam representing the people of Guam and as an American citizen, I have never felt more safe or confident than with you at the helm.
So, with all the criticism going on over there from a guy that's being targeted, we need a president like you. So I'm just so thankful. I'm glad you're holding the helm, sir."
Trump reiterated his pledge to protect Guam from North Korean missiles if dictator Kim Jong Un was to follow through on his threat:
“We're going to do a great job for you, don't worry about a thing. They should've had me in years ago. [...] That was the time. And frankly, you could've said that for the last three presidents.”
The president also told the governor all of the focus on Guam is going to be great for the island's tourism business. “Eddie, I have to tell you,” he said, “you've become extremely famous”:
“All over the world, they're talking about Guam. [...] Tourism is going to go up, like, tenfold. [...] It just looks like a beautiful place.”
Before ending the call, Trump told Calvo: “You seem like a hell of a guy.”
Trump told reporters Thursday a U.S. retaliatory strike against North Korea would be “an event the likes of which nobody's seen before.”
