As the old saying goes, you gotta get up pretty early in the morning to pull one over on Rep. Trey Gowdy (SC). Apparently, CNN anchor Erin Burnett overslept.
During a segment in which Burnett first tried to pit Gowdy against Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) over the questioning of senior White House adviser Jared Kusher, she tried to do the same with religion — specifically, comments made by President Donald Trump.
During a rally in Ohio on Tuesday, Trump referenced worshipping God in America:
“You’ve heard me say it before on the campaign trail and I’ll say it again tonight. In America, we don’t worship government, we worship God.”
After playing the clip, Burnett turned to a tweet from “conservative Bill Kristol,” in which Kristol suggested Trump should keep his religious beliefs to himself:
Then, seeming to think she was going to corner the cagey former prosecutor with a “gotcha” question, Burnett hit Gowdy with an either-or choice:
“Who do you agree with, Bill Kristol or the president, who just came out and definitively said in America we worship God?”
Did Gowdy bite? Of course not:
“How about choice ‘C,’ our Founding Fathers, who gave us a First Amendment, which is a free exercise right but also a freedom to have no religion if that’s what we want. There is no established religion in this country; that’s why we have an Establishment Clause."
First nail in the coffin. Then Gowdy pounded in the second and final nail:
“The president is welcome to share his faith. It’s been done by other presidents. Jimmy Carter did it, John F. Kennedy did it.
If President Trump wants to share his faith, more power to him, but our country recognizes all religions including no religion.”
Discussion over. Burnett ended the segment without a rebuttal.
